Pakistani groups planning attacks

August 18, 2009

Manmohan Singh, Indian Prime Minister, recently claimed that New Delhi has acquired information indicating some terrorist groups in Pakistan are “plotting fresh attacks” against India, and has called for security forces to remain on high alert.

During an inauguration of a conference on internal security with chief ministers, Manmohan Singh has warned against a possible attack in similar nature to the ones perpetrated in Mumbai last year.

“Cross border terrorism remains a major threat … we have credible information of an ongoing plot of terrorist groups in Pakistan to carry out fresh attacks,” said the Prime Minister.

“The area of operation of these terrorists today extends far beyond Jammu and Kashmir and other parts [of India].”

He also said that substantial improvements had been made in Jammu and Kashmir, but “there are some disturbing trends on the horizon”.

“There have been heavy casualties inflicted recently on security forces by [Indian] naxalite groups … the problem of left wing extremism is indeed a complex one. There is a need for a balanced strategy to deal with it.” However, in contradiction to his own prime minister, Home Minister P Chidambaram claimed there was no immediate threat of a terrorist attack against India.
